An Observation That’s Been Bothering Me (And Why I’m Annoyed)
Is it just me or have you also noticed it? 👀
As a brown Southeast Asian woman, I’m pissed.
Lately, I’ve been watching films and series to chill at night. I noticed a common theme that’s irritating. Let me type out my exact thought bubble:
What’s up with ‘diversity and inclusion’ these days? It looks so forced it’s gross.
I understand the purpose is to represent marginalized groups.* When Hollywood first started weaving minorities into roles, it seemed good and respectful.
*Marginalized groups can include women, the LGBTQ+A community, differently-abled people, and persons of all colors, shapes, ethnicity, and religion.
These days, it’s common to watch a movie and spot (too) many representations. For example, there’s a female lead, a same-sex couple, a special needs person, and at least three people of color in one film. In one film!
It’s as if the filmmakers had a ‘diversity checklist’ and said, “Hmm…How many boxes can we tick?”
Maybe I’m overreacting. Let’s see…
There’s the sudden rise of superheroines. We now have She-Hulk, Mighty Thor, and Lady Loki…
